As the summer comes into its own, thoughts are mostly with the Olympic Games in London. However, for those who wish to veer away from the frenzy of Olympic fever and want a quiet relaxing holiday instead, perhaps you might like to consider a refreshing breakaway in the Lake District. At Blenheim Lodge, we have been welcoming visitors to the Lakes for very many years. We ourselves will have been here ten years in September; however the Lodge has been a holiday place of peace and refuge from the hurly burly for at least 30 years before that!
For those of you who are looking for last minute bookings, Blenheim Lodge can offer you pretty rooms with fantastic views of Lake Windermere and the countryside. Ten rooms have shower en-suites, and one room has a private bathroom. The particular charms of each room are dictated by their very individual characters and views from their windows. When we came to Blenheim Lodge, we decided to refurbish the rooms in such a way as to reflect the age of this 1868 house. As with any individual’s home, no two rooms are alike and we adopted this concept when decorating and styling the bedrooms at our bed and breakfast in Bowness-on-Windermere.
Blenheim Lodge is inspected annually by the AA. An independent assessor either visits us incognito when staying over or turns up on our doorstep without any prior warning to check that we continue to meet our 4-star rating standards. The Lodge is assessed on facilities as well as quality of furnishings, and our standards of hospitality and welcome. Little things such as how many times the telephone rings before it is picked up and how we deal with calls are as important as the cleanliness of our guest rooms and public areas. In essence, AA inspectors expect excellent all-round experiences of interaction and accommodation with any property they inspect.
Guests at Blenheim Lodge can certainly expect a friendly and hospitable welcome to our Windermere guest house. As any research of accommodation provision anywhere in the world will highlight, there are many levels and types of serviced accommodation available to suit all budgets and personal preferences. Each accommodation provider will tend to attract a certain type of clientele in general, although there will be some guests who will not find the bed and breakfast places they have chosen suitable to their needs.
At Blenheim Lodge, we try to be as clear as we can about the kind of accommodation we provide. Let me start with a comment from one of our AA inspectors who said that she remembered our place because it is so different from other B&Bs in that all our rooms are unique and we are one of the very few places to stay which boasts spectacular views of Lake Windermere, the fells and hills. The AA inspector’s comment is amply illustrated on our website, www.blenheim-lodge.com, where we have put up photos of rooms and the views from these rooms taken by previous guests who have generously given us permission to use these pictures.
Due to the quirkiness of this Victorian building, Blenheim Lodge has rooms of varying shapes and sizes. Some of our bedrooms are large and others are small. However, in all the rooms, we have tried to be true to the character of this grand old lady of a building, and as such we have furnished many of them with antique furniture pieces, and curtains and other soft furnishings to match. As Hubby and I like good quality products, we have bespoke Laura Ashley curtains in the rooms, lovely Dorma bedding on the beds, and high-end mattresses from And So To Bed.
However, Hubby and I are not flashy people and thus the rooms are far from ‘bling’ in their presentation. Blenheim Lodge is therefore a lovely place to stay for guests who look for comfort, peace and friendliness in their serviced accommodation but our guest house will not suit boutique B&B aficionados. If you are looking for a place with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere that offers bed and breakfast accommodation, great views, responsible personal service, and ‘away from it all’ tranquillity coupled with proximity to the town centre and Lake Windermere, then Blenheim Lodge is a fantastic guest house for a few nights or more away.
This summer, with a forecast now of impending GOOD weather, Blenheim Lodge can offer late availability to last minute bookers. We have single, double, twin and triple rooms available and would love to welcome you to the Lakes. Our seven-night weekly rates are particularly good value as they are lower than our midwinter rates. Having said that, we do not tend to increase our rates by much in the summer – merely by 50 pence to £2 per person per night. The only exceptions to this are our public holiday long weekends and Valentine’s Day weekend rates which have remained static from 2011.
So, whether you are looking for a place to relax and do nothing, or a place to refresh yourself and energetically explore the Lakes, do consider staying at Blenheim Lodge. And if you are an angler and want to fish using our free WAADA permits, feel free to ask for one when you book a stay with us as they are available only on a first come first served basis. Meanwhile, for those who prefer indoor activity or inactivity as the case may be, do ask for our free passes to a private country club which we offer to our guests. Use the gym or laze in the jacuzzi – it is your holiday!
Finally, a word on the joys of parking in Bowness-on-Windermere. Blenheim Lodge has its own car park, so guests may use this while they are staying with us. Parking around the Lakes, however, can be expensive, so if you decide to visit us by coach or rail, do ask the taxi driver to take you to Blenheim Lodge; he or she will know where we are situated. It is only a 5-minute ride from the station to our guest house. Once you are here, we can help with arranging myriad activities and tours to help you make the most of your stay. Having said that, it would be best to book said activities and tours ahead if you are desirous of enjoying bookable activities or events. Just ask us when you are booking a stay with us and we will do our best to help you.
