Autumn in the Lakes

Autumn has now reached the Lakes with fantastic effect: the countryside is awash with foliage of differing hues, creating a riot of colour that tantalises one’s desire to explore and appreciate what nature displays before us. The temperatures are ‘just so’: not too cold and not too hot – perfect for long satisfying walks in fresh country air. While it must be said that the sun does not shine all the time, we haven’t had any deluges recently, so it makes being out of doors a pleasant and exhilarating experience.

At Blenheim Lodge, guests have been taking full advantage of the lovely weather to discover the beauteous environs surrounding us. Some have walked up to viewpoints at the back of our B&B, taking in the 360-degree views that they command and reporting back on their experiences with great enthusiasm. Others have taken a cruise to the opposite side of Lake Windermere in order to climb the hills called Claife Heights. Incidentally, we have a room that overlooks Lake Windermere and the Claife Heights hills for which it is named.

Claife Heights, one of our standard double rooms at Blenheim Lodge, is named after the Claife Heights mountains visible from this bedroom.

In Bowness-on-Windermere, the advent of cooler autumn temperatures has meant that an atmospheric phenomenon known as an inversion has become more common. On Sunday, we saw a layer of thick white mist sitting above Lake Windermere. It cleared some hours later to reveal bright blue skies and sparkling water.

If you are looking for a break in the Lakes, autumn is a good time to visit. Attractions, restaurants, pubs, and all other local amenities are open as usual. At Blenheim Lodge, we are offering our winter rates during the autumn, with further discounts available for longer stays of 3 or more nights, particularly on midweek breaks. Do telephone or email if you want to take advantage of our B&B deals, as these are not available through our online booking facility.

For those of you who intend to visit the Lakes this autumn, here’s hoping that the colours will stay put for some while yet so that as many people as possible can appreciate them. I am sure you will agree that the bright colours of autumn do add a warm glow to the heart especially as the days grow colder. Do take advantage of our late availability and come and enjoy all this for yourselves!
