New Year in the Lakes

Most people think of the English Lake District as a summer destination. Yet people live in the Lakes all year round. Bowness-on-Windermere is a little town like any other you might find up and down the English countryside. People live and work here. There are schools, both primary and secondary, shops, restaurants, hairdressing salons, post office, banks, etc. The big difference of course is that Bowness was established on the shores of Windermere, England’s largest natural lake, and is an immensely attractive place to visit year round.

A winter view from one of our bedrooms at Blenheim Lodge. Bright blue skies, spectacular Lake Windermere dotted with yachts, snow-capped mountains – what a stunning setting and lookout to enjoy from your room at our guest house in Bowness-on-Windermere.

Blenheim Lodge will be open for bed and breakfast accommodation this year over the New Year period. As per usual, we will be open up to 22nd December, and close for Christmas, re-opening again on 28th December. After that, it is business as usual.

So why do people visit the Lake District during New Year? Well, first of all, the Lakes and mountains always look pretty any time of the year. When there is snow or frost, their glitter seems to light up the atmosphere during the shorter winter days.

Secondly, everything is open as usual. Shopaholics can shop to their hearts’ content in small unique shops that line the main roads of Bowness and other Lakeland towns and villages. The majority of visitor attractions are open, ranging from the cruises that ply Lakeland’s many waters to stately homes and other exhibitions.

Thirdly, the countryside is always open for all and sundry to explore. Walk alongside lovely waterfalls, climb the mountains, go fishing, trundle through small country lanes and discover pretty hamlets and villages – all that there is to do in the summer is available to do in the winter. Of course road and weather conditions are different, but one simply takes more care!

Finally, there is always the food! Try some Cumbrian festive foods. The restaurants and pubs will be open and many will have made a special effort with their menus to reflect the festive season. There are plenty of cafes, bistros, pubs and restaurants just a few minutes’ walk from our 4-star B&B that you can eat at.

As for visitors staying at Blenheim Lodge, if it is a quiet place you want to escape to during the annual New Year party season, then you will find it here. We offer bed and breakfast only as usual at the Lodge. Our location ensures a peaceful retreat although you will be able to hear and see the fireworks over Lake Windermere if they decide to hold them this year.

Do come and visit us at Blenheim Lodge for New Year if you get the chance. We have single, double, twin and triple rooms available and prices will range from £53-£75 per person per night for bed and breakfast. All our rooms have stunning views of Lake Windermere or the countryside. We hope you will come and stay with us for a relaxing getaway – and your very own home from home break.

Imagine reading a book on this comfy daybed, and looking up now and then to enjoy those lovely Lake Windermere views.
