As Valentine’s Day approaches, I suppose that many people will be thinking of appropriate gifts for their sweethearts. Some of the most popular choices include luxury chocolates, red roses, champagne and a lovely dinner at a fancy restaurant. These items seem to reflect the thinking of the modern psyche, where the emphasis is on showing one’s regard for the other through items and events not normally contained within the everyday run of things.
Gourmet chocolates, beautiful hand-tied bouquets, expensive champagne and meals at high end restaurants are not normally a staple of most people’s lives. The fact that someone is thoughtful enough to save and plan for such an event is a precious gift in itself and reflects his or her love for the other. And the joy that the recipient evinces on receipt of these gestures will probably be his or her best present to the giver.
However, for couples on a budget, it is quite possible to celebrate Valentine’s Day without breaking the bank by not going to extremes. Taking a short romantic getaway together provides a chance to reconnect with each other in our otherwise busy 21st century lives. Many places to stay will offer discounted rates or packages to couples looking for such a break. At Blenheim Lodge, we have signed up with Cumbria Tourism to include a free bottle of bubbly with any 2-night B&B booking.
I will, however, today put up a more inclusive gift package for a Valentine’s break at Blenheim Lodge. We will still sell bed and breakfast rooms as usual over Valentine’s Day and weekend, but perhaps a bundle of goodies all wrapped up together might be attractive to people who have no time to arrange something like that themselves. I think we will include a gift-wrapped long stemmed single rose, a box of handmade connoisseur chocolate truffles, a bottle of champagne, and discounted bed and breakfast for two nights of course.
For couples wishing to splash the cash, Valentine’s Day is also a popular time for engagements because of its romantic connections. In Bowness-on-Windermere, couples can be seen buying engagement rings in some of its more exclusive jewellery stores. For couples not quite at that stage of commitment but who wish to treat each other, there are other gorgeous pieces of jewellery and watches to buy, designer clothes and shoes, spa treatments and other luxury items and services to purchase as treats for their sweethearts.
Of course there are also more affordable alternatives to designer shops in Bowness-on-Windermere. Couples on a budget may enjoy an excellent meal in one of the many restaurants, pubs, or bistros in Bowness town centre. There are nice shops with lovely products where couples can buy gifts for each other. After all, the importance of celebrating Valentine’s Day is not in the value of the gift but in the emotional meaning behind it.
I shall work on the Valentine’s package later today and post it so that readers can see it. If someone reading this post wants to buy a Valentine’s package from us or wants to make a simple bed and breakfast booking anytime during February, Hubby and I would like to offer a further 5% discount off any of our daily rates. To get the discount, simply book direct with us by email or on the phone and mention that you read about it on our blog.
