New Year in the Lakes

It’s that time of the year again when we are beginning to gear up for New Year in the Lakes. We haven’t really advertised our accommodation much for New Year, but will begin to do so more earnestly now. Over the last number of years, we have retained our previous tariffs for bookings of at least 3 or more nights over the New Year period.

Today, we got our carpet cleaner to come and clean all the carpets in our guest house. We have really good quality wool carpets and he has done an excellent job of cleaning them. That is one job accomplished for welcoming in the New Year.

The Fairfield room at Blenheim Lodge is suitable for double, twin or triple occupancy and has lovely north Lake and fell views. It is available over the New Year period 2013.

Tomorrow, I am going to phone the company from which we purchase some absolutely yummy handmade chocolate truffles. I am only hoping that I will have given them enough time to make the truffles as each one is made by hand. The truffles are made in a small Scottish town where Hubby’s folks still live, so it is a little bit of ‘love from Scotland’!

Bowness and its surrounding towns and villages, as well as much of the Lake District, are living communities and life will of necessity proceed as usual. Many local attractions will also be open; and one can also, of course, rely on the open fells and beautiful lakes for some truly dramatic scenery. I hope that there will be some hard frost at least as one of the most enduring images in my mind’s eye is that of the sun glittering off the frosted surfaces of deciduous trees.

Bright winter sunshine glistens on the frost that rimes these bare branches at Ullswater.

If you are looking for a break during the New Year period as we look to 2015, we still have plenty of availability at Blenheim Lodge. We are a guest house, so we only offer a bed and breakfast option. However, there are plenty of restaurants, bistros, pubs and cafes located just minutes’ walk from us and for the majority of them it will be business as usual. In fact, we can also help our guests make table reservations at local and not so local eateries, and would be pleased to offer this service, as well as to arrange taxi rides as requested.

Here is a link to a local website with the opening times of some popular Lake District attractions: www.lakes-breaks.com/lake-district-opening-times.htm. For the more active among you, perhaps a winter’s day trek might be fun? Over the years, we have had a great many guests who come away on romantic breaks to our B&B and enjoy walks in the fells. However, if  you prefer guided hikes, why not book with The Lake District Walker or other such companies? Of course, if you wish to be indulgent, you could perhaps spoil yourself with a sumptuous afternoon cream tea or even some ‘essential’ shopping!
