Bonfire weekend in November

I had forgotten that the first weekend in November would be bonfire weekend until a guest asked me where she could see some bonfire displays when she comes to stay. It has been a long time since I sat around a bonfire, and, as I think back, I am suddenly missing the fireside atmosphere that accompanies such events. From the mists of time, I vaguely recall grouping with others around a raging bonfire whilst trying to get warm on both sides of my body i.e. the back as well as the front! I do remember the general buzz and laughter, but also the slightly quieter exchanges between my neighbours and I. Food that was barbecued almost to death tasted heavenly although this same cuisine would certainly not pass muster in any self-respecting kitchen! But was such time out enjoyable? You bet it was!

This coming weekend in November will see a number of bonfires taking place in the Lake District and surrounding Cumbrian towns and villages. In Bowness-on-Windermere, where our guest house is located, a bonfire event has been scheduled on Thursday, 5th November, at the Rugby Club: ‘The Windermere Rugby Union family bonfire night and fireworks display features a BBQ, food and refreshments including mulled wine, with the bonfire lit at 6:30pm and fireworks from 7pm.’ Admission charges are £5 per person or £10 for a family. Also on the same evening, the the Rotary Club in Kendal will be hosting a fireworks night at Kendal Castle. This is a free display, although revellers are encouraged to make donations towards the same event in 2016. There are fireworks displays in a number of areas easily accessible from our guest house over the whole weekend, including Saturday, 7th November. Two such events on Saturday will be held at Cartmel, one of my favourite villages, and Hawkshead.

So, if you fancy a Guy Fawkes weekend away in the Lake District and want to see some spectacular fireworks displays, why not come stay with us at Blenheim Lodge B&B? We have some last minute rooms available.
